Wireless Vehicle Detection
The Traffic Congestion Challenge
Traffic congestion continues to grow worldwide as increases in population, urbanization and motorization outpace our ability to increase capacity. Congestion increases travel time, fuel consumption and air pollution.
The Opportunity — Intelligent Transportation Systems
Congestion reduction through the application of Intelligent Transportation Systems requires accurate data that is always available and not compromised by broken wires, weather, occlusion, or calibration issues.
The Solution — Dependable Vehicle Detection
The Sensys Wireless Vehicle Detection System was designed around data dependability—the combination of high accuracy and high availability. The Sensys System uses small, in-ground sensors located immediately under passing vehicles. The sensors send unique vehicle information through a wireless link for data collection, control and aggregation.
Compared to other technologies, like video detection or inductive loops, the Sensys Vehicle Detection System is the most dependable, most flexible, and provides the lowest total operating cost.
What’s Next — Arterial Travel Time
Nowhere is the demand for dependable vehicle detection more acute than on arterial roadways. Arterial traffic accounts for more than half of all traffic today, offering a tremendous opportunity for congestion reduction. Yet, compared to freeways, there is little data on arterial travel times. Measuring arterial travel time is complicated due to traffic signal delays, lane switching, intersection departures and other factors. The Sensys Arterial Travel Time Solution is the first solution to overcome these complications and deliver dependable arterial travel time and volume data while not presenting any privacy concerns.
Arrays of wireless sensors at periodic intervals along the arterial capture anonymous magnetic signatures from vehicles. A patented algorithm re-identifies individual vehicles, producing accurate travel times and traffic volume data. With the Sensys Arterial Travel Time Solution, cities, counties and state agencies are able, for the first time, to provide accurate traveler information on their arterials, and obtain the data required to improve their traffic management systems and support their planning.
