Pravin Varaiya, Sensys Networks Co-Founder, Receives IEEE ITSS Outstanding ITS Research Award

BERKELEY, Calif.--November 19, 2009-- Pravin Varaiya, Ph.D., co-founder and current board member of Sensys Networks, received the 2009 IEEE ITSS Outstanding ITS Research Award. The ITSS Outstanding ITS Research Award recognizes significant research contributions within the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society of the IEEE, the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology.

Dr. Varaiya was honored at a gala banquet, “for contributions to design of Automated Highway Systems and research in wireless traffic surveillance,” according to ITS Society President, William Scherer. Dr. Varaiya helped design the control and communication architecture of the Automated Highway System, demonstrated on I-15 in San Diego. He and his students conducted the early research that demonstrated the feasibility of magnetic wireless sensor for measuring traffic.

Among his various memberships and honors, Dr. Varaiya is a Nortel Networks Distinguished Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department of the University of California, Berkeley, has previously held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Miller Research Professorship.  He received Honorary Doctorates from L’Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, L’Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, the Technical University of Crete, and the Field Medal and Bode Lecture Prize of the IEEE Control Systems Society.  He is a Fellow of IEEE, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Varaiya has co-authored four books and 300 technical papers.
